Twenty-Six

Ashim flicked through the journal Xabian had placed on the desk in the study.

Nearby, Orison looked between the book and Ashim. He could feel her terror through the Equal Bond, though her face gave no indication of it.

He tilted his head, looking over the rushed writing that was a touch on the side of illegible. But it was enough. Inside was a treasure trove of Sila’s new powers and his weaknesses. Sila had four powers to Ashim’s horror: pain, shadows, the ability to rebuild, and a demonic form of Misting.

“Thank you for handing this to us so soon,” Ashim spoke, slowly closing the book.

Xabian shrugged. “I didn’t want any secrets between us.”

The balcony doors opened on a phantom wind, and Ashim threw his hands up in exasperation and levelled his attention on Neasha when he strolled into the room.

Not like they needed him at all during this whole mess.

Or the entire Spirit Realm, to be exact.

“Well, look who bothered to show up,” Ashim snapped. “Sila is intent on taking over the Othereal and unleashing demons onto multiple countries. We don’t know where else they will attack, and we have this mess.” He gestured to Xabian.

“Hey!” Xabian exclaimed.

Orison folded her arms over chest. “I think Ashim’s referring to the fact Sila is planning to possess people for better leverage on acquiring this realm.”

Neasha stood frozen in the doorway as the balcony doors closed. He looked between all three of them as though he was witnessing a miracle. Ashim’s chair creaked as he sat back, closing his eyes as he rubbed the bridge of his nose.

He wanted to go back in time when he wasn’t dealing with this shit.

“There is clearly a lot to catch up on.” Neasha looked at Xabian. “Why are you here?”

“I ran when I learned Sila wanted to possess me. He was going to use me to destroy the Othereal.” Ashim shuddered; no matter how many times Xabian repeated the statement, it always disgusted him. “I couldn’t go through with it. My power is much weaker.”

Neasha swore under his breath and looked at the ceiling. The former king hadn’t solidified his existence, letting Ashim gaze through him to look at Orison, who shrugged and moved her hair over her shoulder.

“There’s a lot going on in the Spirit Realm. The Underworld is a mess, riots are happening all over the place, and then we have to monitor the situation here,” Neasha explained.

“So that’s why the Spirit Realm hasn’t made an appearance as of late?” Xabian asked.

“Correct.” He nodded.

“And they won’t come to our aid?” Ashim pressed.

Neasha was silent for a few heartbeats before replying, “Correct.”

Orison groaned and leaned against one of the bookshelves, staring into space. The room fell silent as they mulled over what this meant. Even though Sila had escaped from the Spirit Realm, they were ultimately on their own to handle him.

Despite every country losing valuable resources to help them win this war.

“The Othereal is not for Sila’s taking; it’s our home and our territory, end of discussion!” Orison snapped.
